Newcastle United Norman E Bartlett

I was born in Byker in 1924 but lived in an orphanage in Surrey because my mother died. I returned to Newcastle when I was 14 years old and started supporting Newcastle in 1938. I can’t remember my first game but the cup successes in the 1950s are my best memories.

In 1955 I went to Wembley through getting tickets from a raffle. We travelled overnight on the bus and got to London early morning. The game was great with Jackie Milburn scoring with his head! The only goal I can remember him ever scoring with his head.

After the game we had a few pints and slept in a park overnight before getting the bus home

Newcastle United Foundation have a heritage project for fans of all ages called Toon Times.

Toon Times will culminate with a major Newcastle United exhibition at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle, although in the lead up to this event Toon Times wishes to reach out to all Newcastle United fans across the North East and further afield to get involved and share their memories, experiences, photos and memorabilia what people have collected over the years.

We are supporting the project by helping to collect NUFC memories online - fans can share their memories on the Replay Football website, simply select the Toon Times tag when submitting yours.

I remember my first match was when we had achieved promotion to the premier league the previous season & were playing a Northern Ireland select team that featured George Best in Billy Bingham's testimonial at Windsor Park, Belfast. Newcastle won 5-2 & afterwards the team bus got stuck coming out of ground so KK got out to direct the driver & saw me walking out in Newcastle scarf & he asked me my favourite player who was Rob Lee & he brought Rob off the bus to have a chat & sign autograph.
