Newcastle United BERNIE LAMB

I just realized the other day that I’ve been a Newcastle supporter for 65 years, ever since I made that first magical trip with my dad to SJP. We used to go there every other week and to watch Gateshead (of the 2nd Division!!) on the other Saturday. I left Newcastle (I was raised in Walker) in 1960 to join the RAF and spent many years either in the deep south or overseas. I then worked abroad for an extended period, and came back in 1989, just in time for the second Keegan era. I was lucky enough to get a season ticket in the East Stand and enjoyed every minute of every match ‘The Entertainers’ played. Still, those early days are the ones that have left the most indelible mark on my ‘Geordiness’ and below is a song I wrote for the album ‘Tune Army’.

And it was great, way back then, them days’ll never come again
Nigh on seventy thoosand in the groond, two pints and a pie for half a croon
Hoy a threepenny-bit to the peanut man, he’d hoy the bag back straight to yer hand
The 10-minute flag, the red track roond. Kids passed owerheed nee sittin’ doon
Laughin’ at the half-time band, the wooden scoreboard done by hand
They were great days at St James’

When I was just a little lad, Aah went to St James’ with me dad
A tanner in the Gallowgate end, up the steps to Geordie Heaven
Eyes like saucers saw them aal, the heroes of Newcastle footbaal
Milburn, Mitchell, Cowell and Crowe; Brennan, Walker and Robledo

In bed with the measles in ’52, match full blast on the Rediffusion
We went and won the cup again, miracle cure when the goal went in!
Made the trip in ’55. Man it was great to be alive
3-1 we won, a fabulous deed. Wor Jackie got one with his heed!

When you think aboot what gans on noo. Players cost millions, pay-per-view
Makes yer wonder how we gaan to give the game back to the workin’ man
But it’s in wor blood, it’s bred in us, so we just pay up, never meck a fuss
But Jackie’s ghost must think it’s a cheek, when he thinks aboot his eight quid a week.
